Case Study: Real-Time NHS Record Access Gives a Mum of Two Confidence to Start Medication

Aimee Bishop, a bank employee and mum of two who lives near Bristol, recently saw her NHS GP and mentioned she had always struggled with her weight. Within days she was seeing another private GP who prescribed Mounjaro, but Aimee says she wouldn’t have ahead with it if her private GP had not been able to check her full NHS medical records via a new, real time, digital sharing app launched nationally this week

“I was talking to my local GP about some my weight issues about nine weeks ago (April 2025). It seemed to be impossible to lose weight, when you’re juggling young children, life and work. You’re always tired and reaching for the quick fix energy booster foods like rubbish carbs. I wanted to break that habit.

“In the conversation with my GP, I said that I was interested in the weight loss injection, and I was specifically interested in Mounjaro, although I didn’t just want to get it from an online pharmacy. I wanted to have a professional refer me basically, instead of just finding someone by myself. She said that she had a colleague, another NHS GP, who has just set up a private weight loss practice. My GP gave me the details of Dr Arpit Srivastava and I reached out straight away.

“I knew I’d have to go private to get the injection, so as soon as I had the private GP’s details, I emailed him the same day, and he came back to me within twenty-four hours. I think it was even less than that, to be honest. Wow. I think it was about eight, half past eight at night, which works for me. It was a video call for our initial meeting.

“I felt reassured about the injection because I was consulting with an actual GP who works in the NHS as well as privately, and also, he said he could access all my NHS GP records which are updated in real time through a new app called ORB which has just launched. We basically had a conversation about my weight on the video call, and afterwards he asked me if I wanted some time to think about if I wanted to go ahead with the injections.

“In between the two meetings, he sent me a link by email to tick a box to formally give him permission so he could have access to my NHS GP’s full records – so he could see everything I can see on the NHS app. It took seconds to allow him to see everything on my patient notes. I found this hugely reassuring that he could check whether I was suitable to have the injections. It was so quick and easy. I don’t know how we could have seen if I was suitable to have the jabs without being able to check what other medications I was taking, or what tests or conditions I have.

“A few days later we had another call when I said I would like to go ahead and have the injections. Him having the access to my notes persuaded me, really, to go ahead, because I didn’t have to explain everything in laser detail. It’s hard to remember everything on your patient records, and it puts the onus on you to remember to tell the doctor, rather than the onus being on the private doctor to check your NHS records.

“In my case, I was taking oral contraceptives, but my private GP could see that I was planning on having a coil fitted, so that was important because Mounjaro can make the Pill less effective, so he was able to advise me about that before I started using Mounjaro.

“We have a video call every four weeks and he’s on Whatsapp in case I have any questions or worries. So every four weeks, the prescription costs £60.  I am down one and a half dress places. I am not hungry, and don’t have cravings for bad food. But any amount of money I’ve kind of saved on takeaways is probably the cost of the prescription.

“If you’re thinking about weight loss injections, do your research. I’d recommend seeing a doctor who can get hold of your patient records through the new ORB app. There is some stuff in my medical record I can’t remember and could be relevant to the Mounjaro, but I wouldn’t know. And I don’t have a clue if any new medications I could be prescribed in future by my NHS doctor could interact with Mounjaro. Only be an expert would know that. And I might forget to mention it. That’s what I think is why I think it’s an important new way of being able to share your records seamlessly between two doctors.”
